Goodnotes Generative AI in Schools Event
Research report released with six key recommendations for schools
Late last week I attended an event at DLD London where Goodnotes, the AI note taking app, unveiled its research report on Generative AI in Schools.
Below I note some of the key points.
Steven Chan, founder, Goodnotes. He invented the app 12 years ago at university.
Report Recommendations for Schools
1. Guidelines
Designing guidelines that are right for your school
Ensure sensible guardrails
Safeguarding and data protection
Involve multiple stakeholders in conversation
Values driven guidance document
A differentiated approach
2. Evolving homework
Audience question: ban or embrace?
Banning AI is not effective but understanding it is
Homework should not be graded
It should be more creative and interactive
3. Evolving coursework
Make more practical
Examples include supporting multimedia, speech and debate
4. Evolving assessment
Active performance and presentation
Portfolio assessment
Diagnostic assessment - find the gaps and teach
Digital citizenship - being online and knowing our responsibilities
5. Professional Development
Finding the time to prioritise AI
Meet day to day professionals
Being clear about school guidelines
6. Sector wide collaboration
Sharing knowledge, skills and expertise
Select the right partnership
These six key points were covered by Daniel, Yetty Williams, Ben Hunter, and Dr. Minh Tran. It was a extremely helpful overview with some solid recommendations. From these, I still feel there a lot to reflect on and incorporate into a digital and AI strategy. If you are researching the space or part of a team implementing an AI or digital strategy, I hope these recommendations are helpful.
The full report is available to view here.
Part two
The research presentation was followed by a panel discussion led by Rowena Chung with Andy Kemp, Jim Knight, and Bukky Yusuf.
Points here include:
Debating the current school system
AI literacy in the workforce
Tools to improve workflow and be better teachers
Playing around and having discussions in school environments
Thinking about the end first and how the curriculum can reflect this.
The best part followed after the event and at the new Goodnotes HQ on Tottenham Court Road in London.
Part three
Analysis and my take to follow later this week.
As a side note, I have not been asked to post this or endorse the product or research.
